Life Threatening Presentations – Recognition and Treatment

This innovative conference is designed to provide clinicians with essential skills relating to the assessment & management of patients who are experiencing life threatening emergencies.  

The conference program will cover a variety of clinical conditions, which if not recognised & treated promptly may result in either death or significant morbidity for the patient.

This conference is designed to facilitate the application of a problem-solving approach to the assessment & management of a wide variety of patient conditions and will present the latest in research & management guidelines for each of the conditions discussed.

Topics will include Respiratory Problems – including hypoxemia and hypercarbia and tension pneumothorax, Chest x-ray interpretation, Arterial Blood Gas analysis, Shock, Anaphylaxis, Chest Pain, Drowning, Thrombolytic Therapy, Diabetic Emergencies, Acute Pulmonary Oedema, Envenomation & Stroke.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the assessment & management of the patient with respiratory problems such as hypoxaemia, hypercarbia, & tension pneumothorax
  • Describe the pathogenesis, signs & symptoms of Anaphylaxis, & the management strategies that may be employed to treat the patient
  • Describe the assessment (including signs & symptoms) & management of the patient with Diabetic decompensation with any of the following conditions; hypoglycaemia, diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Describe the assessment & management of the patient who has been, or may have been envenomated

Ken Hambrecht

RN, ICU Cert., B.Sc, (Physiology & Biochem.), M.I.Biol, M.Ed., J.P. MACN

Ken Hambrecht, RN, ICU Cert., B.Sc, (Physiology and Biochem.), M.I.Biol, M.Ed., J.P. MACN, has extensive experience in the area of Critical Care practice and education. Ken has had more than 20 years of experience Co-ordinating and teaching in Critical Care Courses and involvement in Medical Education.

Ken is a past President of the Victorian Branch of the Confederation of Australian Critical Care Nurses (CACCN) and has also been a National Executive member of CACCN. Ken is a member of many state and national committees and has many publications to his credit in the areas of respiratory and cardiac medicine, pulse oximetry, professional development, and CPR.

Conference Program:

The program content is provided by expert Educators with extensive clinical and education experience. The education content provided in this program meets the same exacting standards as anything offered in an Australian land-based program.

In the spirit of adult learning, the Conference is delivered in two formats. The live presentations delivered in the Conference Room and there is the online library which is open one month prior to the actual Conference dates. The library is an essential component of the entire Conference program.

The library consists of Conference material supplied by the Presenter/s which can include any of the following:

  • Research documents
  • Links to external information
  • Recorded Conference presentations
  • Electronic Notepads

The research documents and recorded Conference presentation form part of the Continuing Professional Development activities but are delivered to you prior to the commencement date so that you can start your Conference Program early. If you choose not to undertake these activities prior, there is a two week window post the Conference where the library remains open to you. You can also undertake the library activities during the actual Conference.

There are four (4) Conference Programs being offered on the ship. You can attend all four or just one – the choice is yours.

From Hollywood celebrity sightings to incredible restaurants and legendary clubs. And, there’s so much natural beauty to explore on a cruise to Cabo. Soak up the sun on the sandy white beaches or explore the arch of Cabo San Lucas (“El Arco”) the beautiful rock formation at Land’s End.

day FOUR:

12 OCTOBER 2020 | Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Travel through the locks of historic Panama Canal, on a journey between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Venture through the virgin rain forests and bird sanctuaries of Puerto Limon. Then bask on the Mexican and Costa Rican beaches with a margarita.

Acapulco is the most famous Destination of Mexico with International level, thanks to the natural beauty environment, golden sand, tropical weather, warm sea water and its people. Sea lovers find this destination so attractive obviously, but it is more than that, it has more attractions to satisfy all preferences for all ages, however.

day SEVEN:

15 October 2020 | At Sea | CPD: 6 hrs each session

day EIGHT:

16 OCTOBER 2020 | Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala

Guatemala’s largest Pacific Ocean port, Puerto Quetzal offers a wealth of activities. Discover Lake Atitlan, the deepest lake in Central America, which is surrounded by three volcanoes. The area is rich in Mayan history, as well as a fertile ground for coffee growing.

17 OCTOBER 2020 | Free Day

Enjoy this day to do as you please. Take advantage of all the fabulous things this amazing cruise ship has to offer.

Join with other Conference delegates this evening for an informal discussion on the conference program thus far. This is an optional activity and the venue will be announced once on Board. 

day TEN:

18 OCTOBER  2020 | Puntarenas, Costa Rica

The world knows Costa Rica for its ecological biodiversity and national parks, and Puntarenas welcomes you to many of these treasures—Pacific beaches, renowned surfing, rainforests, and wildlife. Ride horseback through secluded tropical forests or along the wide open beach. Plunge below the surface to discover reefs teeming with marine life. Spot monkeys, crocodiles, scarlet macaws, and other birds by cruising through the mangroves or up the Tárcoles River.

21 OCTOBER 2020 | Cartagena, Colombia

Cobbled streets, balconies with blooming bougainvillea, and pastel plazas make Cartagena one of Latin America’s most photogenic cities. But it’s not just another pretty seaport. Founded in 1533, this Spanish-Colonial city is steeped in history. Its location made it a popular port for plunderers and pirates. Today thrill-seekers will find a perfect mix of old and new with a twist of island attitude.
