Mental Health First Aid: Non-suicidal Self Harm Workshop

4 CPD Hours

Mental illness is common in our society with one in five adults experiencing a mental illness in any one year. Half the people who experience mental illness will not seek treatment and delayed treatment will adversely affect the success of any clinical intervention.

These numbers would indicate that acute hospitals, aged care services, and medical practices would have clients presenting with mental illness that require support and diagnosis – but a large number of these services do not employ mental health trained staff.

There will also be a number of staff in the workplace who will also experience a mental illness in the next 12 months and your service will need to have the resources to identify those that may need support and ongoing assistance.

The term ‘non-suicidal self-injury’ (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves.
It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death.

When we use the term ‘self-injury’ we are specifically excluding painful or damaging behaviours that are socially accepted or ‘sanctioned’ such as tattooing, piercing or other forms of body art, and cultural practices involving injury.

This course gives participants an opportunity to learn how to help someone who is engaging in self-injury.

During the Mental Health First Aid for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course, you will learn how to assist a person who is engaging in self-injury.is for any interested adult. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

The course curriculum is evidence-based, as informed by the Mental Health First Aid Australia Guidelines.

See what other MHFA attendees have said…

Sue was fantastic, she presented in a very engaging and timely manner and kept everyone entertained throughout the duration of the course.  She also allowed herself and everyone in the course to have their own perspectives from their own experiences with mental health, which was very interesting considering we had such a diverse range of clinical specialisations attending the course.

Sue gave excellent coverage of the course with her ease of manner and I feel it will be beneficial to me both in my nursing work and my personal life.

Sue had an engaging style for lecturing on this subject and was easy to listen to.She encouraged questions and answered most of them. The exercises to illustrate different mental health problems were good as were the videos showing situations when dealing with mental health patients.
