Module Eight of the Nine Module NCI Wound Management Program

Small group, hands-on workshop, led by a recognised Nursing Specialist in wound care.

This Seminar will be delivered in two learning modes:

Prior to the 20th of March, attendees will be provided with a series of 6 webinar presentations. The webinar component allows you to explore the theory behind the practical application of the content in the workshop setting. The webinar recordings will be made available to attendees as part of the online library to support learning in Module 8 and should be completed prior to the 20th of March.

On the day you will be immersed in a simulated environment utilising the latest in wound care models to explore and practice key wound care strategies.

In this Seminar, we will explore module eight. Modern wound care embraces the application of traditional, refined, and new treatment modalities. Nurses work in a variety of settings and require confidence and competence in many wound-related practices. This module focuses on common wound-related Nursing tasks.

NURSE WOUND MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Nursing CPD Institute has created a nine-module wound management program that provides the Nurse with the skill and knowledge to assess, plan, and manage wounds in the clinical setting to achieve the best possible outcome for the client.

  • Determining which aseptic technique is required for which wound

SEMINAR PROGRAM

WEDNESDAY, 20 MARCH 2019 | MORNING SESSION

0830 – 0900: Registration and morning coffee

0900 – 1030: In this session, we will explore the practical skills required to undertake these two key would management tasks and practice in a simulated environment.

Accurately Measuring a Wound
Accurate measurement of a wound in critical in the process of wound assessment. Failure to measure a wound accurately can result in inappropriate wound management strategies and non-healing wounds.

In this session, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the different devices available for measuring wounds
  • Examine best practice recommendations for accurate wound measurement
  • Explore practical strategies to address common issues associated with measuring hard to access wounds
  • Review how to correctly document the measurements of a wound

Packing a Wound
Packing a wound takes knowledge of wound physiology and skill to ensure that additional injury is not caused to the wound tissue.

In this session, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the physiological aspects of wounds that must be considered prior to packing wounds
  • Review common criteria used to determine when wounds should be packed
  • Review the process for packing a wound
  • Explore practical strategies to address common issues associated with packing wounds

1030 – 1100: Morning Tea

1100 – 1300: In this session, we will explore the practical skills required to undertake these two key would management tasks and practice in a simulated environment.

Applying Debriding Agents
Debriding agents are used to facilitate wound healing. With an expanding range of products on the market, the Nurse must be skilled and knowledgeable in the judicious application of debriding agents to reduce the potential for adverse effects.

In this session, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the different types of debriding agents available
  • Examine best practice recommendations for the application of debriding agents
  • Explore practical strategies to address debriding agent adverse effects
  • Review specific debriding agents and their indications and contraindications

Tips for Wound Product Application and Removal
With over 3000 wound care products on the market, it can be difficult to be aware of the specific recommendations for application and removal of the products.

In this session you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the categories of wound care products available on the market
  • Learn the ‘groups’ of wound products found in each wound category
  • Explore practical ways to recall specific product application and removal recommendations
  • Review specific wound care product recommendations

 

WEDNESDAY, 20 MARCH 2019 | AFTERNOON SESSION

1300 – 1330: Lunch

1300 – 1500: In this session, we will explore the practical skills required to undertake these two key would management tasks and practice in a simulated environment. There will also be revision discussion on all eight (8) topics that make up this module of the wound care program.

Skin Tear Alignment
Skin tears occur in those with fragile skin, including neonates and more frequently in the elderly. Correct skin tear alignment is pivotal in the early resolution of skin tear injuries.

In this session you will:

  • Review the physiology associated with the creation of skin tear injuries
  • Examine best practice recommendations for the management of skin tears
  • Learn the process for realigning skin tears
  • Review the wound products available to support the healing of skin tears

Compression Bandaging
Compression bandaging remains an effective treatment for supporting venous ulcer wound closure. In appropriate bandaging can cause significant adverse effects for the client.

In this session, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the recommendations and contraindications for the use of compression bandaging therapy
  • Explore practical strategies to employ to address common issues experienced by your patients receiving compression therapy
  • Examine best practice recommendations for the application of compression therapy
  • Review the key information required to provide education to your clients

1500 – 1530: Afternoon Tea

1500 – 1630: Continuation of Compression Bandaging session and bringing it all together

The Governance oversight for the content of this Education program and the issuing of the associated CPD Certificate is provided by the Education Governance Committee of the Nursing CPD Institute (NCI). SEMINAR PRESENTER

Cheryl Dezotti is a Director and co-founder of the Nurses for Nurses Network and the Nursing CPD Institute. As a Nurse Education Consultant, and a Wound Care Specialist,  Cheryl is a member of the Education Governance Committee of the Institute as well as a key contributor to the online education platform She is also the editor, and major contributor, of the Nursing News Blog.

Cheryl’s varied and interesting career highlights include clinical experience in acute surgical, medical, and infection control. The completion of her Master’s degree in Quality in Health Care led to senior management roles in both the acute and aged care sectors, the later leading to her appointment as a Nurse Advisor and Administrator with the Department of Health and Ageing.
